On the April 15 episode of Saturday Night Live, regulars Kate McKinnon, Vanessa Bayer, and Aidy Bryant led the cast in a sketch depicting a middle school performance of Legally Blonde the Musical gone terribly wrong. Watch a clip below.
The pre-taped Digital Short, titled “Before the Show,” cuts between the teen girls discussing their groundbreaking production in the dressing room (“We’re the first middle school in all of Kansas to perform it!”) to the unfortunate onstage performance.
Some believe it was a parody of this clip of a youth theatre production of the show at Vancouver's Red Room Studio.
This isn’t the first time the show has spoofed the culture of musical theatre fangirls.
During the episode hosted by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, there were multiple musical sketches, including “Crucible Cast Party,” which captured the embarrassment and ridiculousness of high school productions and their after-parties.
