Several students from Riverdale High will take the stage in the new episode, including Cheryl Blossom (played on screen by Madelaine Petsch) as the title role, Archie (K.J. Apa) as Tommy Ross, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) as Chris Hargensen, and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) as Sue Snell, and Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick) as Margaret White. Kevin (Casey Cott) will direct his fellow students.

The musical adaptation of Stephen King's novel premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1988. The Broadway bow, which featured Tony winner Betty Buckley as Carrie's mother Margaret, closed after 16 previous and five regular performances.
