Off-Broadway News Video: See 2 Songs From We Live in Cairo, a New Musical About the Arab Spring

The show, starring Ali Louis Bourzgui, will soon begin performances at New York Theatre Workshop.

The new musical We Live in Cairo is getting ready for performances at Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop. Its cast gave a preview of the show with two songs: the group number "Genealogy of Revolution" and "Movement," sung by cast members Nadina Hassan and Ali Louis Bourzgui. Obie winner Taibi Magar directs the production, which will begin previews October 9 prior to an official opening October 27 for a limited engagement through November 24.

Featuring a book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson Grant winners and NYTW Usual Suspects The Lazours (Daniel and Patrick), We Live in Cairo is inspired by the young Egyptians who took to the streets amidst the throes of the Arab Spring.

Winner of the Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theater, the new musical follows six student activists using their street art, photography, and song to overthrow a regime older than they are.

The cast includes Bourzgui (The Who's Tommy), Drew Elhamalawy (Cupid for Christmas), John El-Jor (Mean Girls), Hassan (Mean Girls national tour), Michael Khalid Karadsheh (The Ally), and Rotana Tarabzouni (Alien of Extraordinary Ability).

The upcoming production will also have choreography and movement direction by Ann Yee, scenic design by Tilly Grimes, costume design by Dina El-Aziz, lighting design by Bradley King, sound design by Justin Stasiw, video design by David Bengali, orchestrations by Daniel Lazour and Michael Starobin, vocal arrangements and music supervision by Madeline Benson, music direction by Mona Seyed-Bolorforosh, and voice and text coaching by Xavier Clark.

We Live in Cairo, which made its world premiere at American Repertory Theater, is produced by special arrangement with Madison Wells Live.
