Vergara is scheduled to play a five-week run as Matron "Mama" Morton on Broadway as well as a brief stint in the show's national tour.
Vergara will be Morton at Broadway's Ambassador Theatre through May 24 before heading to Miami to star in the Chicago national tour at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, May 26-31. Vergara will then return to the Broadway company June 1-7.
Vergara has also started work on the new ABC-TV pilot "An American Family." Her screen work also includes "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns," "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Entourage."
As previously announced, three-time Emmy Awrd nominee Chandra Wilson ("Grey's Anatomy") will assume the role of Matron "Mama" Morton June 8.
The Chicago cast currently features two-time Tony nominee Charlotte d'Amboise as Roxie Hart, South Africa native Amra-Faye Wright as Velma Kelly, Tony nominee Tom Hewitt as Billy Flynn and Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart.
Chicago won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 1997 as well as awards for actors Bebe Neuwirth and James Naughton, director Walter Bobbie, lighting designer Ken Billington and choreographer Ann Reinking. The original production was directed and choreographed by the late Bob Fosse.
Chicago plays the Ambassador Theatre, located at 219 West 49th Street.
