The U.K. premiere of a new rock musical Lizzie begins performances February 22, prior to an official opening February 24 at the Greenwich Theatre, for a run through March 12. It stars Eden Espinosa, best known for her Broadway roles as Elphaba in Wicked (which she also played in Los Angeles and San Francisco) and Brooklyn (in which she originated the title role).
With music by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Alan Stevens Hewitt, lyrics by Cheslik-DeMeyer and Tim Maner, and book by Maner, the show transfers to London following a run at Denmark's Fredericia Teater. It is produced by Fredericia Teater in association with Aria Entertainment.
On a sweltering summer morning in 1892, in a small New England city, a prominent businessman and his wife were axed to death in their home. Their daughter Lizzie Borden was the prime suspect. Lizzie’s trial was a coast-to-coast media sensation, and her story has become an American legend. In the show, four women front a six-piece rock band.
According to press materials, the sound of the show owes less to Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber than to Bikini Kill, the Runaways, and Heart.
Espinosa is joined by Bjorg Gamst, Jodie Jacobs, and Bleu Woodward.
The show is directed by Victoria Bussert, with lighting by Martin Jensen and Bo Kudsk, and sound design by Tim Hoyer. Set design is by Anders D. Jensen and Jens Frausing, and costume design by is Michael Nøhr. Original costume designs are by Michael Nøhr, with additional costume design by Anna Juul Holm. U.K. casting is by Anne Vosser.
