From Brooklyn Bridge to Battery Park, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
The Joyce Theatre’s annual Ballet Festival returns August 12-17 with a celebration of choreographer Jerome Robbins. New York City Ballet Principal Dancer has curated three programs featuring dancers from NYCB, American Ballet Theatre, Paris Opera Ballet, and the Royal Ballet. Peck herself will perform A Suite of Dances, becoming the first woman to dance this role created by Robbins for Mikhail Baryshnikov. Other featured works will include Concertino, Four Bagatelles, In the Night, Other Dances, Rondo, and an excerpt from Dances at a Gathering.
The 44th annual Battery Dance Festival continues through August 16 at Rockefeller Park in lower Manhattan. The festival features performances from over a dozen international dance companies, including the Bulareyaung Dance Company from Taiwan, Platforma 13 from Romania, Wan Dance from Indonesia, and will showcase the work of choreographers including Faizah Grootens from the Netherlands and Mofassal Alif from Bangladesh.
Pianist Spencer Myer will perform Debussy’s complete Preludes at BargeMusic August 16. Myer will then be joined by cellist Adrian Daurov August 17 for two performances of Brahms’ Cello Sonatas No. 1 and 2.
The JACK Quartet will give the world premiere of Rand Steiger’s Introspective Trilogy August 12 at the Dimenna Center for Classical Music’s Mary Flagler Cary Hall. The work comprises three movements, titled “Undone,” “Inward,” and “Rage/Resolve,” written between 2016 and 2025. The Bozzini Quartet will play the same venue August 15, giving the world premieres of Taylor Brook’s Vinetan Songs and Zosha Di Castri’s Delve, as well as the U.S. premiere of Cassandra Miller’s Three Songs.
