The Broadway revival of Kenneth Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery, directed by Lila Neugebauer, concludes its limited run at the John Golden Theatre January 27. The memory play, seen Off-Broadway in 2000 and a 2001 Pulitzer Prize finalist, is about the final years of a grandmother’s battle against Alzheimer’s disease.
Neugebauer directs a cast led by Oscar nominees Elaine May as the feisty Gladys Green and Lucas Hedges as her grandson, along with Tony Award winners Joan Allen and David Cromer and Tony nominee Michael Cera. The production began previews September 25, 2018, ahead of an October 25 opening.
In The Waverly Gallery, Gladys is an old-school lefty and longtime owner of a small art gallery in Greenwich Village. The story intimately observes the impacts of her decline on her work and her family, especially her grandson.
The Broadway revival features sets by David Zinn, costumes by Ann Roth, lighting design by Brian MacDevitt, sound design by Leon Rothenberg, and hair and make-up design by Luc Verschueren for Campbell Young Associates. Gabriel Kahane composed original music.
