The Vineyard Theatre will honor Michael Mayer at its 35th anniversary gala in New York City this May. The annual gala will celebrate the Tony-winning director, with whom the Off-Broadway theatre has worked for nearly 25 years on a number of plays and musicals.

The gala will be held May 14 in the Edison Ballroom, located at 240 West 47th Street. The lineup of guests and performers will be announced closer to the date.

Mayer’s Vineyard productions include Brooklynite, of which he was also a co-book writer, True History & Real Adventures, Antigone in New York, and America Dreaming. Mayer, a Tony winner for his direction of Spring Awakening, will return to Broadway this summer with the Go-Go’s musical Head Over Heels, as well as in 2019 with the Adam Diver-led revival of Burn This.

His recent works include Michael Moore’s The Terms of My Surrender on Broadway, the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s opera Marnie in London, the West End run of Funny Girl, the Off-Broadway production Love, Love, Love, and the Broadway revival and National Tour of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His feature film, The Seagull, starring Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Elisabeth Moss, and Brian Dennehy, will be released later this year.

“Michael Mayer has directed some of the most exciting and original shows of the past decades, from Side Man to Spring Awakening to Thoroughly Modern Millie to American Idiot to the recent revival of Hedwig And The Angry Inch,” comments the Vineyard’s artistic directors Douglas Aibel and Sarah Stern. “He is an artist of great vision, artistry, intelligence, and versatility, working in theatre, opera, film, and television, who has helped to expand the boundaries of the musical theatre form.”

Tickets to the celebrations can be purchased by emailing [email protected] or calling (212) 353-3366, ext. 1227. Funds raised will benefit The Vineyard’s 2017-2018 season.
