The Metropolitan Opera will present an encore broadcast of Mozart's The Magic Flute to select cinemas worldwide on Saturday, December 6.
Originally broadcast on December 30, 2006, the abridged English version of Mozart's classic opera, presented in Julie Taymor's vibrant production, was the first transmission of the Metropolitan Opera's Live in HD series of cinema broadcasts, now in its 20th year.
The broadcast performance stars soprano Ying Huang as the princess Pamina, tenor Matthew Polenzani as the prince Tamino, baritone Nathan Gunn as the birdcatcher Papageno, bass René Pape as Sarastro, and soprano Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night. In the fairy tale opera, the Queen of the Night sends Tamino on a mission to rescue her daughter Pamina from the clutches of Sarastro, while Papageno tags along as a reluctant sidekick.
The production features costumes by Taymor, sets by George Tsypin, lighting by Donald Holder, choreography by Mark Dendy, and puppetry by Taymor and Michael Curry. The English translation was penned by J.D. McClatchy.
The annual holiday tradition also returns to the Metropolitan Opera House, running December 11 - January 3 with two alternating casts. Read more here to learn why The Magic Flute is the perfect beginner opera.
