The Lion King star Vincent Jamal Hooper, Broadway's current Simba, has tragically lost his apartment and everything he owns in a devastating five-alarm building fire, where thankfully none of his neighbors were hurt.
Hooper describes that he discovered the fire coming home from the November 8 performance of The Lion King, and has since been displaced and expects to be for the foreseeable future. Despite this, Hooper seems intent on performing throughout this difficult time, writing that he's "fortunate that this devastating event finds me employed" in a GoFundMe launched November 9. At time of publication, the campaign has exceeded Hooper's original $10,000 goal, what he calls a "blind guess" as to his losses in the fire—he is not sure exactly how much financial support is ultimately needed.
"This is an unprecedented moment for me and setback that requires me to effectively start over; I’m seeking help in that process and this fundraiser is just one of many resources I’m attempting to utilize in that effort," said Hooper on the GoFundMe campaign's webpage. The funds will help Hooper rebuild what has been lost, and, presumably, assist in any temporary living accommodations. Click here to view the campaign page to share or donate.
A separate GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist other residents of Hooper's entire Washington Heights building who were impacted by the fire. The proceeds will go towards housing, medical bills, food, clothing, supplies, mental health support, and more. Click here to view the building-wide campaign page to share or donate.
