The Guthrie's new season will kick off with the stage adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer-winning book To Kill a Mockingbird. Set in the Deep South, the timeless tale of Atticus Finch and his battle against racism will be staged following the release of the author's anticipated sequel in July. Adapted by Christopher Sergel, the production will be directed by John Miller-Stephany.
The season will continue with a presentation of The Events, from the U.K.'s Actors Touring Company. David Greig's play was inspired by community violence and a community's search for compassion, peace and understanding in the wake of attacks. Following a New York Theatre Workshop staging earlier this year, the Guthrie production will be directed by Ramin Gray with music composed and arranged by John Browne.
The upcoming season will mark the first for incoming artistic director Joseph Haj, who will take the helm July 1. "I could not be more excited about beginning my tenure at the Guthrie. The coming season will offer our patrons an exceptionally rich variety of theater-going experiences and I can’t wait to get to know our Guthrie community this fall," he commented in a press statement. Haj will make his Guthrie directorial debut with his acclaimed production of Shakespeare's Pericles in January 2016.
The season will conclude in June 2016 with the multi-Tony-winning South Pacific, also directed by Haj. Set on a Polynesian island during the Second World War, the romantic musical follows the lives and stories of the military men, nurses and residents.
Other shows slated for the Guthrie season include The Cocoanuts with music and lyrics by Irving Berlin, book by George S. Kaufman, adapted by Mark Bedard with musical adaptation by Gregg Coffin; The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard; The Critic by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher; the Pulitzer-winning plays Harvey by Mary Chase and Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar, as well American classic Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress.
