There's nothing quite like your first Broadway show. From the excitement of picking out an outfit, to making dinner reservations beforehand, a first Broadway show is a milestone in anyone's life. And hopefully, you will love the show so much that you'll come back for another Broadway show or even a repeat visit. Playbill wants to make your first time at a Broadway show a success, so that is why we've put together this handy first-timer's guide for the musical & Juliet—one of Broadway's most popular shows.
Below, we answer your most frequently asked questions about the hit jukebox musical & Juliet, which was nominated for nine 2023 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
What Is & Juliet About?
With a book by Emmy winner David West Read, the exuberant musical flips the script on the classic Shakespeare tragedy Romeo and Juliet, exploring what would have happened had Juliet not taken her own life. This uplifting tale of female empowerment is infused with the pop songs of Max Martin and the songs he wrote for artists such as Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, and more—"Oops, I Did It Again,” "Can't Stop the Feeling," “Roar,” "Since U Been Gone," “I Want It That Way,” among many others. By the end, the audience is on its feet celebrating this feel-good production.
What Is the Running Time of & Juliet?
& Juliet runs two hours and 30 minutes, including one intermission. You should aim to get to the theatre at least 30
minutes early if you need to use the restroom, or if you want to buy a
drink or merch. & Juliet runs on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre, at 124 West 43rd Street
Do I Need to Listen to the & Juliet Cast Album?
Not necessarily, as you will probably know many of these hit tunes. And, even if you are unfamiliar with Max Martin's catalog, the musical so seamlessly weaves the songs into the script that it seems as if they were written for this production.
If you do check out the original Broadway cast recording (released in 2022 by Atlantic Records) prior to seeing the show, please be aware that the cast you see on Broadway will
be different than those featured on the album—which preserves the original New York company. Many of the
actors featured on the recording have left the production, which means there are
new actors in their place. So allow those new actors to put their own
mark on the roles, and these classic songs, and don't expect them to be exactly like the actors
you hear in your headphones.
Can I Sing Along With the Cast?
You will likely know at least one, if not all, of these Max Martin gems, so you might feel a great temptation to sing along. But that can be disruptive to the audience members around you, who also paid money to see the show. So while you can sway or applaud at a particularly impressive moment, keep the singing at home or at least wait until the curtain call to show off your vocals!
& Juliet does sometimes host sing-along performances, though those will be announced in advance, and will be noted when you buy your ticket.
Is & Juliet Family Friendly?
& Juliet does contain adult language, so it is recommended for ages eight and older.
In addition, the score can be quite loud so earplugs are recommended for sensitive ears. There's also moments with bright flashing lights, which those with light sensitivity should be aware of.

Where Should I Sit at & Juliet?
In 1998, Roundabout renovated, reopened, and operated the former Henry Miller’s Theatre as a Broadway home. In 2009, the Henry Miller’s Theatre reopened as the first LEED-certified Broadway theatre, raising the bar for environmentally sustainable design and construction of performing arts venues, while in 2010, it was renamed the Stephen Sondheim in honor of the legendary composer and lyricist’s 80th birthday.
Featuring an orchestra and mezzanine section, the Sondheim has good sight-lines. But if you want specifics, the middle to back orchestra, or the front of the mezzanine offer the best views—because sitting too close to the stage can prevent you from seeing what's happening in the back of the stage. And sitting a bit higher in the mezzanine is actually quite beneficial because it lets you see the action happening in the balcony section of the set. But you can't go wrong, wherever you're sitting. (Please note that there are a handful of seats listed as obstructed view, but when you select the seats online, you will be informed of this. These obstructed view seats are Rows A-B seats 7-10 and Rows LB and RB seats 1-8.)
What Should I Wear to & Juliet?
Business casual is a good rule of thumb for & Juliet or any Broadway show. There's no need to dress too formally. Remember, it can feel tight in a Broadway house, so don't wear anything that will spill over to the seat next to you or will block the view of the folks sitting behind you. (Caps and hats should be removed, as they can block the view of those behind you.)
There is a coat/bag check room at the Sondheim, so a bag or other item that doesn't fit under your seat can be checked.
Is the Stephen Sondheim Theatre Accessible?
Yes. Accessible restrooms are located on the second level of the theatre. And, all levels (Rear Mezzanine, Lounge/Restrooms, House Right Box, Rear Orchestra/Bar, & Front Orchestra/Accessible Restroom) except the House Left Box are accessible by elevator.
As for seating, there are six transfer seats (Row C seats 11 and 12, Row H seats 1 and 2, and Row T seats 15 and 16) in the orchestra, and there are two transfer seats in the mezzanine (Row JJ seats 1 and 2). There are additional transfer seats that require 1-4 steps to reach (Row S seats 1, 2, 101, and 117; Row AA seats 13 and 14). There are also six wheelchair accessible seats in the Orchestra (Row A seats 7 and 8, Row T seats 1 and 2, 13 and 14) and six wheelchair accessible seats in the mezzanine (Row JJ seats 102, 104, 114, 116, 15, and 16).
The Sondheim also has 100 hearing devices available for audience members at each performance, as well as three loops. On-demand captioning and audio description are available two ways, via a device that theatregoers can check out at the theatre or the GalaPro app on their smart phone. See an usher and front-of-house worker and they can assist you.
Where Is the & Juliet Stage Door?
The stage door is located at 124 West 43rd Street, although it's technically in the underpass that connects 42nd and 43rd streets. But if you are going to stage door, be sure to follow stage door best practices: A signature from a cast member is a bonus, not a guarantee. And be kind to your fellow fans stage dooring (no pushing).
