Steppenwolf Theatre's world premiere of La Ruta, a new play from Chicago playwright Isaac Gomez, has assembled all-female cast of Latinx artists. Directed by Steppenwolf ensemble member Sandra Marquez, La Ruta will run at the Chicago company from December 13 to January 27, 2019.
Based on true events, La Ruta is the story of a bus route located in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico—the home of several U.S.-owned factories. To the women who work, live, and sometimes disappear along the route, La Ruta is more than a simple means of transportation. Following the stories of two mothers searching for their missing daughters, the show is inspired from actual testimonies and features live music evoking protest marches and factory work.
The cast will include Karen Rodriguez (Ivonne), Charin Alvarez (Marisela), Cher Alvarez (Brenda), Laura Crotte (Desamaya), Sandra Delgado (Yoli), Mari Marroquin (Zaide), and Alice da Cunha and Isabella Gerasole (Women of Juarez).
The production will feature sets by Regina García, costumes by Christine Pascual, lighting design by Jesse Klug, sound design by Mikhail Fiksel, and musical direction by Zacbe Pichardo.
