Spring Awakening launched its U.S. tour at San Francisco's Curran Theatre Sept. 4, 2008. While the Orlando engagement at the Carr Performing Arts Center marks the final step on the equity tour, the musical will resurface later this year in a non-equity road engagement from NETworks Presentations. The NETworks website reveals that Spring Awakening will first play Western Hall in Macomb, IL, Oct. 15. Casting for the fall tour re-launch will be announced shortly.
Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening won eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Spring Awakening features direction by Michael Mayer, choreography by Bill T. Jones, book and lyrics by Sater and a score by Sheik.
The current tour features Jake Epstein as Melchior, Christy Altomare as Wendla and Taylor Trensch as Moritz.
The musical made its world premiere Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theater Company in June 2006. Spring Awakening transferred to Broadway November 2007 and concluded its Broadway run Jan. 18, 2009. The musical was presented in London's West End and continues to be produced in countries throughout the world. A film of the property is being developed.
