News RSC Announces Casting for 2016 Production of Hamlet at Stratford-upon-Avon The Royal Shakespeare Company's previously announced production of Hamlet, starring Pappa Esseidu in the title role under the direction of Simon Godwin, has announced casting.

It will begin performances at Stratford-upon-Avon's Royal Shakespeare Theatre March 12, 2016, prior to an official opening March 22, for a run in rep through Aug. 13. It will open the RSC's 400th anniversary-year marking of Shakespeare's death.

The cast will also include Hiran Abeyskera (as Horatio), Cyril Nri (Polonius), Tanya Moodie (Gertrude), Bethan Cullinane (Guildenstern), Marcus Griffiths (Laertes), Theo Ogundipe (Fortinbras/Marcellus/Lucianus), Natalie Simpson (Ophelia) and Clarence Smith (Claudius), with further casting to be announced.

In a press statement Godwin commented, "I wanted to find a context where, as a character, Hamlet could feel dislocated, where he could feel conflicted by the demands of his ancestors against the pressure to find a new way of thinking. I began to imagine a Denmark re-conceived as modern state influenced by the ritual, beauty and cosmology of West Africa."

The production will be designed by Paul Wills with lighting by Paul Anderson and sound by Christopher Shutt. Music for the production is composed by Jamiroquai percussionist Sola Akingbola.
