Love Labour's Lost, the directorial return of Tony Award-winning actor Roger Rees to San Diego, ends its run on the Old Globe Theatre's mainstage Oct. 28. Performances began Sept. 17 with an opening Sept. 23.
Love's Labour's Lost is set in the court of Navarre, where King Ferdinand and his chief courtiers have sworn off love and the pleasures of the flesh to study and learn. They are quickly thwarted by the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting, all of whom fall for the wanna-be scholars of Navarre. Earlier this year, Love's Labour's Lost was made into a 1930's period musical comedy with Kenneth Branagh, Alessandro Nivola and Alicia Silverstone.
Rees won a Tony Award as the title role in Nicholas Nickleby. Since then, he has returned to the New York stage, most recently as Astrov in the Roundabout revival of Uncle Vanya and opposite Uma Thurman in The Misanthrope. As a director, Rees helmed the Old Globe's staging of The Merry Wives of Windsor in 1999 and Williamstown Theatre Festival's The Rivals and The Taming of the Shrew, as well as productions in his native England.
Ben Livingston and Meg Brogan lead the cast as the King of Navarre and the Princess of France. Also in the company are Bix Bettwy (Moth), Christine Brown (Jacquenetta), Paul Cassell (Dumain), Rebecca Creskoff (Katherine), Al Espinosa (Longaville), Patrice Miriam Johnson (Rosaline), Matthew Letscher (Berowne), ALan Mandell (Boyet), Rob Nagle (Dull), Joe Nesnow (Forester/Mercade), Michael Potts (Sir Nathaniel), Sam Wright (Costard), Peter Van Norden (Holofernes) and Sarah Zimmerman (Maria).
