The operatic adaptation of The Exterminating Angel received its American premiere October 26 at the Metropolitan Opera. Composer Thomas Adès takes the podium during the Met run to conduct his 2016 piece, inspired by the Luis Buñuel film of the same name.
The opera, featuring an ensemble cast of 15 principal singers, begins at a lavish dinner party. Following the festivities, however, the attendees realize—with no legitimate explanation—that they cannot leave the room. Trapped for days, the group descends into madness, chaos, and confusion.

The cast features Audrey Luna, Amanda Echalaz, Sally Matthews, Sophie Bevan, Alice Coote, Christine Rice, Joseph Kaiser, Frédéric Antoun, David Portillo, David Adam Moore, Rod Gilfry, Kevin Burdette, Christian Van Horn, John Tomlinson, and Iestyn Davies, who will also make his Broadway debut this season in Farinelli and the King. Also appearing onstage: three live sheep.
