Ratings: How Did Rent on Fox Fare? | Playbill

Film & TV News Ratings: How Did Rent on Fox Fare? The January 27 broadcast drew in lower ratings compared to earlier TV musicals.

On January 27, Fox aired its anticipated presentation of the Jonathan Larson musical Rent. In the end, due to an injury sustained by actor Brennin Hunt, the network aired footage from the January 26 rehearsal (taped with a live audience) for the majority of the broadcast, switching to the live feed of the musical in the final 15 minutes.

So how did Rent on Fox fare in the ratings?

According to Nielsen's fast national numbers, published in The Wrap, Fox's Rent received a 1.4 rating among adults 18 to 49 and 3.415 million total viewers. This ranks it below Fox's 2017 holiday broadcast of A Christmas Story: Live, which was previously the lowest-ranked of the live television musical presentations.

NBC's 2013 broadcast of The Sounds of Music remains the top-rated live presentation. Fox's Grease is in second place, followed by NBC's The Wiz Live.

In addition to Hunt, the cast of Rent on Fox included Jordan Fisher as Mark, Vanessa Hudgens as Maureen, Tinashe as Mimi, Valentina as Angel, Brandon Victor Dixon as Tom Collins, Kiersey Clemons as Joanne, and Mario as Benny.

Rent on Fox was directed by Michael Greif (who also helmed the original Broadway production) and live TV director Alex Rudzinski. Sonya Tayeh served as choreographer.

The producing team included Marc Platt and Julia and Al Larson, sister and father to the late Jonathan Larson.
