Pierre Marais, who played the role of Sammy and understudied the role of Joe Gillis in the Tony-winning revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Blvd., steps into the latter role full-time beginning July 8.
Marais succeeds 2025 Tony nominee Tom Francis, who played his final performance July 6 at Broadway's St. James Theatre. Francis, who departed the Jamie Lloyd-directed production due to a previous professional commitment, originated the role in London’s West End in fall 2023, earning an Olivier Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.
Marais will continue in the part until the musical's final performance July 20. The Tony-winning revival recently welcomed Jordan Donica, last on Broadway in a Tony-nominated turn as Lancelot in the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Camelot, to the role of Max von Mayerling. He succeeded Olivier winner David Thaxton, who played his final performance June 8.
The Broadway company of Sunset also stars 2025 Tony and 2024 Olivier winner Nicole Scherzinger as Norma Desmond and Olivier nominee Grace Hodgett Young as Betty Schaefer.
