Waking up. That’s my dog Milo.
John Cariani
Milo is slow to wake up.

Going for a run. Matinees always feel so early. So I have to go for a run to wake up.

On my run—awesome view of the GWB.

Not an omelette. But—eggs for breakfast!

Getting to the theater and seeing Leslie, one of the head usher guys.

Lolly my (and Heidi Blickenstaff’s and Kate Reinders’) dresser. She keeps us looking good and feeling good. She comes to our rescue when we have colds. She knows how to heal.
John Cariani
I get to the theater at half-hour. And Kate and Heidi are getting into hair and costumes and so I don’t see them until the places call. So I yell Hi through the door.

My Sonos. I love it. Favorite thing in my dressing room. Right now it’s playing Little Big Town. Wayne Kirkpatrick (he co-wrote the score and lyrics to Something Rotten! with his brother Karey) produced and wrote on their first few albums. They’re my favorite country band.

Christian Borle bring me creme brulee almonds. From Starbucks. Because I love them. He has his Shakespeare rockstar makeup on already.

We just got places! Last minute preparations. First time I usually see the ladies! I don’t think they wanted me to take this picture.

Heading to places. Brooks and Brian chatting. Brooks is just not funny at all. Ever. I feel sad for him

My favorite part of the show! Places! We all hang out behind the drop and get ready for Michael James Scott to sing his face off and welcome everybody to the renaissance. You can see Marisha Wallace and David Hibbard and Angie Schworer in this pic.
MK Flynt, PSM. I think she had just called her first show and I was congratulating her. And giving her a few notes. (Nooo! She was perfect!)

My partner, John, and Heidi and I and Heidi’s new husband, Nicholas. We had just had dinner together between shows. Nizza. Very tasty.

Signing a pile of playbills for BCEFA, I believe, in between shows.

Cassie, our sound maven, and Russ, our doorman. Ran into them as I was…

…delivering BDJ a cookie. He likes cookies. And this one is from Amy’s. Chocolate chip. With salt. Mmm.

Visited the boys upstairs. Matt Wall and Eric Sciotto. True gentlemen.

Bugging Kate. She’s a goofball. And the best stage girlfriend a guy could hope for. Her comic timing...it’s perfection. And check out that pillow. I miss the 90s. The 1990s. I love the 1590s!

Half hour again. This time…some Pat Benetar is playing. Oh, yeah.
John Cariani
Putting my mic on. This only my second Broadway show and I love how small these things are. Now you see it…
John Cariani
Now you don’t.

Intermission. Crème brulee almonds. Instead of potato chips.

Visiting two of the funniest and best guys on Broadway, Brad and Brooks.

After the show, Tricia Paoluccio and Gabe Barre visited backstage. Tricia and I did Fiddler together. Gabe directed Almost, Maine off Broadway in 2006 and his new show, Amazing Grace is opening this summer on Broadway!
The new musical set during Shakespeare's time — in which two brothers, desperate to write a hit play of their own in Shakespeare's shadow, end up creating the next big thing, a musical.
Something Rotten! has music and lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick. Wayne is the Nashville-based songwriter whose music has been recorded by such artists as Amy Grant, Garth Brooks, Eric Clapton, Trisha Yearwood and others; while brother Karey is an L.A.-based screenwriter-director whose projects include "James and the Giant Peach," "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and "Chicken Run." Karey Kirkpatrick is collaborating on the musical's book with John O'Farrell ("An Utterly Impartial History of Britain, or 2000 Years of Upper Class Idiots in Charge," "Spitting Image"). The creative team includes Scott Pask (scenic design), Gregg Barnes (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design), Peter Hylenski (sound design), Josh Marquette (hair design), Phil Reno (music direction / conductor), Glen Kelly (arrangements), Larry Hochman (orchestrations) and casting by Telsey + Company/Bethany Knox, CSA.
Here's how the musical is billed: "Welcome to the '90s — the 1590s — long before the dawn of premium tickets, star casting and reminders to turn off your cell phones. Brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rockstar known as 'The Bard.' When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! But amidst the scandalous excitement of Opening Night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self… and all that jazz. With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, Something Rotten! is an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals — those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us, and remind us that everything’s better with an exclamation point!" Something Rotten! is produced by Kevin McCollum, the Tony Award-winning producer of In the Heights, Avenue Q and Rent.
