According to an Equity casting notice, two-time Emmy winner and five-time Tony-nominee Patricia Birch will helm the Off-Broadway debut of Sweetee, a new musical by Gail Kriegel, set in 1930s America. The story follows the struggles of a bi-racial woman named Sweetee during the Jim Crow era.
According to the notice, Sweetee is scheduled to begin May 21 ahead of a May 24 opening, and will run through June 18 in the Ford Foundation Studio Theatre at the Pershing Square Signature Center. Doug Katsaros is music director, general management is by Martian Entertainment, and Michael Cassara, CSA, is the casting director. The limited run is produced by Dream Big Theatrical.
Previously titled Sweetie, Kriegel’s musical received an AEA showcase in 2014, also directed by Birch. Listen to select tracks from the earlier showcase of Sweetie here.
