Following a 2015 run in Stony Point, New York, Penguin Rep’s production of Small World—a new play about the making of Fantasia—will debut Off-Broadway this fall at 59E59 Theaters. Frederick Stroppel’s comedy imagines the meetings between Walt Disney and composer Igor Stravinsky as Fantasia, Disney’s 1940 animation masterpiece, comes to fruition.
Mark Shanahan will reprise his role as Walt Disney in the New York City production, along with Stephen D’Ambrose as Stravinsky. Performances will begin September 13 ahead of a September 17 opening.
The Off-Broadway engagement, directed by Joe Brancato, is scheduled through October 7.
The design team includes scenic designer James Fenton, lighting designer Christine Watanabe, costume designer Patricia E. Doherty, and sound designer William Neal.
“When Walt Disney hears ‘The Rite of Spring,’ he envisions the creation of the earth, volcanoes and, of course, dinosaurs! But composer Igor Stravinsky has another vision altogether,” read production notes for Small World. ”We go behind the scenes of Disney’s classic Fantasia, where the dinosaurs aren’t the only ones doing battle.”
