The stage musical adaptation of Muriel’s Wedding, which is set to have its world premiere at the Sydney Theatre Company in November, will not arrive in Toronto this coming spring as previously announced.

Based on the 1994 Australian film comedy that starred Toni Collette, Muriel’s Wedding was to bow in Toronto April 3–May 3, 2018, as centerpiece of the Mirvish Season.

Mirvish representatives stated that scheduling conflicts have forced the production to delay to “a subsequent year.” A new target season was not revealed, however, Muriel’s Wedding will premiere as scheduled in Sydney this fall.

PJ Hogan, who authored the original screenplay for the film, will write the musical’s book, which is receiving a contemporary update for its stage debut. The musical will feature a score comprising ABBA pop hits alongside original songs by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.

Maggie McKenna will play the titular Muriel and Madeleine Jones will play Muriel’s best friend Rhonda in the Sydney world premiere.

Filling the spring slot will be the London revival of Annie, which will be directed by Nikolai Foster.

The Mirvish season will also feature the North American premiere of the Jim Steinman-Meat Loaf musical Bat Out of Hell, which will arrive this fall, beginning October 14–December 24.

Casting has also been announced for the Mirvish productions of King Charles III (February 10–March 4, 2018), which will feature David Schurmann, Jeff Meadows, Shannon Taylor, Wade Bogert-O’Brien, Jessica Greenberg, Guy Bannerman, Gray Powell, Patrick Galligan, Amy Rutherford, Sam Kalilieh, and Karl Ang.

The Toronto run of Fun Home (April 13–May 6) will include Evan Buliung, Laura Condlln, Cynthia Dale, Sara Farb, Hannah Levinson, Jasper Lincoln, Liam MacDonald, Eric Morin, and Sabryn Rock.
