Even in the middle of summer, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s series of Summer Evening concerts continues this week with concerts July 23 and 27. The July 23 concert will feature pianist Orion Weiss, violinists Lun Li and Danbi Um, violist Paul Neubauer, cellist Sterling Elliott, and clarinetist Ricardo Morales, playing a program including works by Mozart, Richard Strauss, Robert Schumann, Ernő Dohnányi. The July 27 concert will feature violinists Sean Lee and Cho-Liang Lin, violists Aaron Boyd and James Thompson, cellist Nicholas Canellakis, and flautist Tara Helen O’Connor, playing a program of works by Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, and Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst.
The Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center opens its summer season July 23 and 24 with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, and the North American premiere of Huang Ruo’s City of Floating Sounds. Music director Jonathon Heyward conducts. July 26 and 27, Kazem Abdullah will conduct the Festival Orchestra for a concert including Brahms’ Violin Concerto, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, and Louis W. Ballard’s Incident at Wounded Knee.
The Gotham City Brass Quintet will play a free concert July 25 at Staten Island’s Historic Richmond Town, presented by Carnegie Hall Citywide. The program will include works ranging from Bach’s Toccata, Adagio, and Fugue in C Major, BWV 564, to selections from West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein. Works by Dukas, Scheidt, Debussy, David Chesky, and Texidor Dalmau will also feature.
Dance company Pilobolus returns to the Joyce Theatre for three weeks, running July 23-August 11, with re:CREATION, a dynamic collection of works from the dance company’s history. The company will present 10 ballets across two programs, Dreams and Memory, including two New York City premieres of new works.
From July 23-26, the 92nd Street Y will present Midsummer MusicFest, featuring musicians from the Curtis Institute of Music, including soprano Sophia Hunt, clarinetist Sara Han, violist Roberto Díaz, pianist Ying Li, violinist Timothy Chooi, and marimba player Ji Su Jung. The concerts will feature music ranging from Mozart and Schubert to Bernstein and Gerswhin.
