Matt Bomer will reportedly play a lover of Leonard Bernstein in the upcoming biopic Maestro, Variety reports. Netflix has neither confirmed nor denied the casting at this time.

Bradley Cooper is set to star as the musical icon, in addition to co-writing the screenplay and directing the project, his follow-up to the Oscar-winning A Star Is Born. Carey Mulligan will play Bernstein's wife, Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. 

Maestro will focus on the relationship between the celebrated composer and his wife, Felicia. The two wed in 1951, despite Bernstein's homosexuality being widely uncontested. 25 years later, Bernstein left the marriage to be with a male partner, before returning to his marriage one year later when Montealegre was diagnosed with cancer. He was with her until she died in 1978. They had three children together—Jamie, Alexander, and Nina—who have worked closely with Cooper to develop the project.

Cooper told Variety in January that Maestro will start shooting in May. “I wanted was to be was a conductor, since I was a kid... I was obsessed with it, asked Santa Claus for a baton when I was 8. Listening to music, falling in love with it and being able to really know every single moment of a piece, like Tchaikovsky’s ‘Opus 35’ in D major, this violin concerto. I could do it as if I knew everything about it without really being able to speak the language, obviously. Steven Spielberg knew that I had this obsession with conducting... and I told him "listen, all I want to do is write and direct movies... and he was kind enough to hand it off to me to explore.”

A release date for the film has not been announced.
