Revolutionary Colombian painter Débora Arango is getting the biopic treatment thanks to some theatre artists. Colombian stage star Marcela Mar will star in the title role of Débora, to be written by stage director-writer and cabaret star Will Nunziata, who's executive producing with Yaakov Gottlieb.
The film will dramatize Arango's life, showing how she used her art to rebel against the patriarchy, censorship, and religious persecution while reshaping 20th century Colombia.
“I was drawn to Débora Arango’s story because it’s a timeless portrait of resistance, truth, and artistic bravery,” says Nunziata in a statement. “Her paintings weren’t just art; they were acts of defiance. In telling her story, I hope to remind audiences everywhere that one voice, especially when silenced, can echo for generations.”
“Marcela Mar is the perfect choice to embody this complicated, courageous, and visionary woman,” adds Gottlieb. “Her body of work speaks for itself: fierce, elegant, and unafraid. Her performance will introduce a global audience to an artist the world urgently needs to know.”
The project plans to launch at festivals internationally in 2027.
