Greenfield will succeed Jenny Gersten, who is departing Williamstown to become the executive director of the New York City non-profit Friends of the High Line. In 2010 Gersten was appointed the first female artistic director of the Massachusetts theatre company. In September 2014, Greenfield will become Williamstown's second woman artistic director.
Williamstown producer Stephen Kaus will oversee the season. Greenfield will take over as artistic director following the conclusion of Williamstown's 60th anniversary season.
Greenfield's work at MTC included overseeing programming on the New York City non-profit's two Off-Broadway stages and its Broadway home, the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Greenfield is a member of the Broadway League, serves on the advisory board of the Drama League, and is a judge for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. Greenfield graduated magna cum laude from Yale University.
"I am thrilled to build upon the rich history of the Williamstown Theatre Festival and create bold, adventurous work with the company," Greenfield said in a statement. "I look forward to producing theatre with writers, directors, designers, actors, and apprentices passionate about making great art, in a spectacular and singular environment, in the seasons ahead. I am excited to work with the festival's devoted board, unwavering supporters, and loyal audiences to sustain and grow one of the great American cultural treasures."
