Mint Theater Company presents the New York premiere of Lynn Riggs' Sump'n Like Wings, officially opening October 10 after beginning previews September 21. Performances will continue through November 2 Off-Broadway at Theatre Row. Raelle Myrick-Hodges is directing.
Sump'n Like Wings follows Willie Baker, a 16-year–old girl too proud and too wild for the life she’s living in Oklahoma. Her mother runs the dining room in the hotel her uncle owns, and Willie is stuck helping her. Riggs, who wrote Sump'n Like Wings in 1925, is perhaps best known for penning the source material that inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!
The cast includes Julia Brothers, Andrew Gombas, Traci Hovel, Lukey Klein, Richard Lear, Mariah Lee, Mike Masters, Leon Pintel, Buzz Roddy, Lindsey Steinert, and Joy Avigail Sudduth. Casting is by Stephanie Klapper.
The creative team features scenic designer Junghyun Georgia Lee, costume designer Emilee McVey-Lee, lighting designer Isabella Gill-Gomez, sound designer Sean Hagerty, production stage manager Jeff Meyers, and stage managers Arthur Atkinson and Miriam Hyfler.
“A good play often means different things to different people," Mint Artistic Director Jonathan Bank said in an earlier statement. "As the father of a 16 year old, for me Sump'n Like Wings is a play about parenting—I see that everywhere. You may see it as a play about growing up, or about friendship, or family, or about the need for independence or freedom—and the dangers that accompany both. Riggs has written a remarkable play about home. I’m grateful that we get to introduce it to you.”
