Producers Howard and Janet Kagan announced Sept. 3 that the show's opulent custom venue Kazino will move to the Times Square theatre district for a 14-week limited engagement through Dec. 31.
"From day one, we've been committed to giving this unique and spectacular piece of theatre the kind of life it deserves," said producers Howard and Janet Kagan in a statement. "Once the show caught on downtown, we explored a number of options of where it could continue following our summer engagement, and we’re very fortunate to have found a prime spot in the heart of the theater district. We're ecstatic that audience response has made it possible for us to keep The Great Comet burning brightly in New York."
Ghostlight Records will release a two-disc cast album, preserving Malloy's original score — which merges Russian folk and classical music with indie rock, electronica and organ-influenced cadences — later this year.
Casting for the uptown production will be confirmed at a later date.
The piece is the recipient of the 2013 Richard Rodgers Awards for Musical Theater, and previews began Off-Broadway May 1, following its world premiere at Ars Nova. Critics praised the production. Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 featured many of the original cast members from Ars Nova, including Brittain Ashford as Sonya, Shaina Taub as Princess Mary, Blake DeLong as Bolkonsky/Andrey, Amber Gray as Helene, Nick Choksi as Dolokhov, David Abeles as Pierre, Grace McLean as Marya D, Paul Pinto as Balaga, Phillipa Soo as Natasha and Lucas Steele as Anatole.
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, according to producers, "invites you to join Tolstoy's brash young lovers for an evening you'll never forget, as vodka flows and passions ignite in Dave Malloy's electropop opera, ripped from a slice of 'War and Peace.'"
Every ticket to the production included a full Russian-style dinner.
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 is produced by Howard and Janet Kagan and co-produced by Paula Marie Black, John Logan, Lisa Matlin, Daveed Frazier, Tom Smedes, and Vertical Entertainment/Roman Gambourg/Lev Gelfer
