When sneak peek photos were released this week for ABC's upcoming animated-live action hybrid Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration, there was someone missing.
While there were photos of star Josh Groban as Prince Adam, no Beast was to be found among the celebrity cast donning the high-concept costumes of the beloved Disney characters. Turns out we won't have to wait until the December 15 broadcast on ABC; Groban revealed his Beast costume in a video on Instagram. Get a look at the 10' puppet in the post below.
The Beast costume was designed by Marina Toybina. "She designed it so that the power and size of the Beast would be evident but also that I could be seen as Prince Adam 'trapped' inside by the prison of the curse," says Groban in his post.
R&B superstar H.E.R. stars alongside Groban as Belle, with a cast that also includes Joshua Henry as Gaston, David Alan Grier as Cogsworth, EGOT winner Rita Moreno as the narrator, Martin Short (It's Only a Play) as Lumiere, Jon Jon Briones (Miss Saigon) as Maurice, Shania Twain as Mrs. Potts, Rizwan Manji (Schitt's Creek) as LeFou, and Leo Abelo Perry as Chip.
Following the ABC broadcast, the special will stream on Disney+ beginning December 16. Jon M. Chu, film director of IntheHeights and Wicked, will executive produce the special, and Hamish Hamilton (The Little Mermaid Live, The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards) will direct.
With a screenplay by Linda Woolverton and a score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, Beauty and the Beast released in 1991. Based on the classic fairy tale, the work would make its way to the stage, Disney's first Broadway outing, in 1994, becoming a massive hit and running until 2007.
