The British character actor John Thaw, of TV's "Inspector Morse" and many theatrical productions over the years, died of cancer Feb. 21, according to newspaper reports.
Mr. Thaw, 60, was known to stage, TV and film audiences, particularly for the Colin Dexter detective he played in 33 episodes. His London stage credits include David Hare's The Absence of War (and later the film version) directed Richard Eyre, a version of Peter Pan (as Captain Hook) seen in 2001 at the Royal Festival Hall, Pygmalion in 1984 and All My Sons in 1985, and many more. The Manchester native studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and made his professional stage debut in 1960 at Liverpool Playhouse, according to The Guardian.
His TV credits include "The Sweeney," "Thick as Thieves," "Home to Roost" and "Kavanagh QC."
He is survived by his wife, Sheila Hancock, and three daughters.
