Hopkins played in such legendary New York venues as the Apollo, the Cotton Club, and the Savoy. He was inducted into the Columbus [Ohio] Senior Musicians Hall of Fame in 1996.

Jazz Saxophonist Sammy Hopkins Dies
Sammy Hopkins, a jazz saxophonist who toured the country with big bands in the 1930s and 40s, died on October 3, the Richmond, Indiana, Palladium-Item reports. He was 88.
After starting his career in the six-piece Richmond band Spiritual Rhythm Boys, Hopkins went on to tour with the bands of Zach White, Chic Carter, and Lucky Milinder, as well as with singer Ethel Waters.
