Gary Griffin (The Color Purple) will direct the new musical based on the 1992 film comedy film. The musical has music and lyrics by Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years, Songs for a New World) and a book by Andrew Bergman, who wrote and directed the film.
Griffin has been shepherding the project for several years. Honeymoon in Vegas had previously announced a 2012 Toronto premiere prior to a 2013 Broadway arrival, but plans were scuttled last August.
The project has now found a path to New York, with performances scheduled Sept. 26-Oct. 27 at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. The casting notice states that the production is expected to transfer to Broadway in spring 2014.
Denis Jones will choreograph Honeymoon in Vegas, which will have musical direction by Tom Murray.
Paper Mill has not announced its season. "Paper Mill Playhouse can neither confirm or deny that we will be producing Honeymoon in Vegas during our 2013-2014 season,” stated Shayne Miller, a representative for Paper Mill, in an e-mail to Playbill.com. Composer-lyricist Brown has a full plate this season. He is directing the Second Stage Theatre's revival of The Last Five Years, which begins performances Off-Broadway March 7; in addition to a special New York City concert staging of his revue Songs for a New World on March 11; and the world premiere of his new musical The Bridges of Madison County, which will play the Williamstown Theatre Festival this summer.
Honeymoon in Vegas, according to an earlier production announcement, tells the story of "Jack Singer, a regular guy with an extreme fear of marriage. When his girlfriend Betsy puts the pressure on, Jack finally pops the question and they head to Sin City for a whirlwind wedding weekend. But when Vegas wise guy Tommy Korman catches a glimpse of the stunning bride-to-be, and notices her uncanny resemblance to his late wife, he does everything possible to break up the romance and get his own second chance at love."
The 1992 movie "Honeymoon in Vegas" starred James Caan, Nicolas Cage and Sarah Jessica Parker.
