The Vagina Monologues creator V has penned a new work, This is Crazy!, which will give a benefit performance at Symphony Space in NYC October 6, with a Los Angeles performance to follow next year. Proceeds from both will go to The National Alliance on Mental Illness.
The all-star cast of the New York bow will include Jane Fonda, Marisa Tomei, Mark Ruffalo, Sanaa Lathan, Rosanna Arquette, Lois Smith, Rachel Hilson, Olivia Oguma, Colette McDermott, Derrick Delgado, Luke Ferrari, Doireann Mac Mahon, Clarence Maclin, and Mohammad Saleem, with V at the helm.
Much like The Vagina Monologues, This is Crazy! collects various monologues, this time themed on personal perspectives of mental illness. The October performance will mark the beginning of Mental Illness Awareness Week.
“We’re deeply grateful to V for bringing these powerful stories to the stage and for choosing NAMI as the beneficiary," says NAMI CEO Daniel H. Gillison, Jr. in a statement. "At NAMI, we know how much storytelling can reduce stigma, inspire understanding, and create pathways to help and hope. The support from this production will strengthen our work to ensure that people affected by mental health conditions and their families get the care and community they deserve.”
The project comes from CAA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the entertainment agency CAA, in memory of talent manager Chris Huvane. Mental health advocate and NAMI National Board Member Ruth-Ann Huvane is producing.
“Chris was adored by all who had the honor of knowing him," adds Huvane. "He was outspoken about living with and battling depression for years before he died by suicide. His experience taught us the importance of providing help and support for people and families affected by mental illness. To honor the life and legacy of Chris, my family and I are committed to supporting NAMI’s mission to provide advocacy, education, support, and public awareness about mental illness. Thank you to NAMI, V, and the CAA Foundation for embarking on this journey to help pay tribute to our brother Chris."
The hope is that This is Crazy! will help to spark conversations. Mental health conditions touch one in five adults and one in six kids aged 6-17 in the U.S. every year, making it a situation that affects nearly every family. NAMI works to help give individuals and families the support and resources they need.
