Take Me America, a new musical with a book and lyrics by Bill Nabel and music and additional lyrics by Neil Berg, will be presented in NYC with an invitation-only industry reading February 13 at Studios 353. The reading is being presented by Stony Point, New York's Penguin Rep Theatre, with Artistic Director Joe Brancato at the helm.
The work follows seven immigrants applying for asylum to the United States. Wendy Bobbitt Cavett is music supervising and arranging, with Matthew Stephens as music director, William Bastiason as musical transcriber, Michael Palmer as stage manager, and Isaac Goldbaum as assistant stage manager.
The reading will feature performances from Jennifer Apple (The Band's Visit), Jonny Lee Jr. (Pacific Overtures), Sharone Sayegh (Beetlejuice), Sam Snyder, Akron Watson (The Color Purple), and Paulina Yeung (The King and I).
Berg has previously collaborated with Robert Schenkkan on the musical The 12 and Cary Gitter on The Sabbath Girl: The Musical. He's currently working on a musical version of My Cousin Vinny with book writer and lyricist Dale Launer.
Nabel, a Richard Rodgers Prize finalist for an earlier iteration of Take Me America, is also an actor, and veteran of Broadway's Beauty and the Beast, A Chorus Line, Sweeney Todd, and 42nd Street.
