Ian McKellen on Getting More Crowds Than the Pope at the Pride Parade | Playbill

News Ian McKellen on Getting More Crowds Than the Pope at the Pride Parade Celebrated stage and screen actor Sir Ian McKellen, currently starring as Sherlock Holmes in "Mr. Holmes," recently appeared on "Live Kelly & Michael," and spoke about his experience as grand marshall of the New York City gay pride parade on June 28.

"Well you can imagine. It was shortly after the announcement by the Supreme Court so everybody was excited so it was just wonderful," said McKellen.

"I'm rather gratified because there were ten rows of people either side of the avenue. I think we got more crowds than the Pope did in Ecuador."

The parade featured over 55 floats traveling down Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. McKellen shared the role of grand marshall with well-known U.K. actor Sir Derek Jacobi among others.
