Target Margin artistic director David Herskovits will stage the new look at Chekhov's classic. It will officially open April 30 for a run through May 19.
Greig Sargeant will star in the title, in a cast that also features Clare Barron as Marina, Don Castro as Telegin, Rebecca Hart as Helena, Susan Hyon as Sonya, Mary Neufeld as Serebryakov, Edward O'Blenis as Astrov and Steven Rattazzi as Mme. Voynitskaya.
According to Herskovits, "Our reimagined production of Uncle Vanya is 'After Anton,' in many senses, the theme of our current season. It is a later recreation of a classic work, like a painting, 'after an old master.' But it is also a memory, a recollection of a story, people, feelings, that may seem lost in the distance, and yet suddenly present. Everyone in this story is living in the past or living in the future, but only rarely do they actually engage with the present, the full passionate immediate moment."
"My approach to telling the story reflects that displacement," he added. "We have reinvented the text through a process of workshop play, reading, and rewriting; as if the story had been learned, forgotten and then remembered in different words. So, too, I hope to create a layered event, with the sounds, colors, and immediacy of lived experience sometimes muted and sometimes vivid; sometimes grisaille and sometimes Technicolor."
