Topping the list with seven nominations each were "12 Years a Slave" and "American Hustle," which are competing for Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), respectively. Steve McQueen was nominated for his direction of "12 Years a Slave," and Hans Zimmer was nominated for the score of the film.
Amy Adams and Christian Bale were respectively nominated for Best Actress and Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for "American Hustle," and Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper received supporting nods for their performances in that film.
Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, who co-star in Tracy Letts' gripping family drama "August: Osage County," were nominated for their performances as drugged-out matriarch Violet Weston and her daughter Barbara Fordham, respectively. Streep received a nod for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), and Roberts was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
The Disney animated film "Frozen" was nominated for Best Animated Feature, and its song, "Let It Go," penned by husband-and-wife songwriters Tony Award winner Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, received a nomination for Best Original Song.
Other stage stars who received 2014 nods for their film work include Tom Hanks, Cate Blanchett, Judi Dench, Robert Redford, Bruce Dern and Sally Hawkins. Among television nominations were "Downton Abbey" and "The Goodwife" for Best TV Series, Drama, and "The Big Bang Theory," "Girls" and "Modern Family" for Best TV Series, Comedy.
