Sand in the Sandwiches

Edward Fox is to return to the West End's Theatre Royal Haymarket in Sand in the Sandwiches, a play by Hugh Whitemore celebrating the life and work of former poet laureate John Betjeman that has previously toured and will now tour again.

Described as a journey through memory and verse that collates the work of the 20th-century’s most treasured poet, it is directed by Gareth Armstrong, and will play London dates at the Haymarket from May 30 to June 3, with stops also planned in Northampton, Cambridge, Malvern, Woking, Brighton, and Bath.

In a press statement, Fox said, “It is lovely to be returning to one of the great theatres of the world and to the role of John Betjeman, even now at the age of 80. All of us involved are working to magnify the voice of one of the greatest minds in England. Betjeman once said that ‘poetry is life,’ and I agree. You can't live without it.”

The producers are Jonathan Church, Oliver Mackwood Productions, and Oxford Playhouse. The production is designed by Fotini Dimou, with lighting by Howard Harrison, and sound by Simon Slater.
