The Dramatists Guild, a membership association for stage writers, has released a statement in solidarity with Jimmy Kimmel. The statement also criticizes ABC for pulling Kimmel's show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, off the air “indefinitely,” due to pressure from the FCC and the Trump Administration.
In the statement, the Guild says: "The Dramatists Guild of America stands in solidarity with Jimmy Kimmel and his writers. We condemn any and all threats against freedom of speech made by the current administration and the FCC chair.
"It is one thing for the government to threaten ABC's broadcasting license because they don't like what was said on the public airwaves, and quite another for a major media company to bow down to such an abuse of authority. The Dramatists Guild is built on the principle of the writers' full creative freedom and agency, and the 1st-amendment rights guaranteed to everyone in the Constitution.
"Attacking the media and silencing its critics is the first strategy of all oppressive authoritarian regimes. When it happens, it needs to be called out and confronted, and we support the statement from the Writers Guild of America and many others for doing just that."
On September 15, Kimmel criticized Republicans on his late night show for politicizing the murder of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk. Following, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said that he would take action against ABC and its affiliates for Kimmel's remarks, including fining the company or taking away its license to broadcast. Disney, who owns ABC (which airs Kimmel's show), then made the decision to pull Kimmel off the air and said they were suspending his show “indefinitely.” President Trump has celebrated the move, saying that Carr and the FCC should revoke the broadcasting license of networks that criticize him.
ABC's actions have led to criticisms from former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Kamala Harris. On The Late Night Show September 18, host Stephen Colbert said, "No matter what they claim, this is not entirely about what Jimmy said on Monday. This was part of a plan. How do I know that? Two months ago, when the President was tastefully celebrating my cancellation, he posted, 'Jimmy Kimmel is next to go' ... This whole thing is the latest and boldest action in a long campaign against media critics. Trump has personally sued ABC, CBS, The New York Times, the Des Moine Register ... plus he defunded PBS and NPR."
Colbert has previously claimed that CBS cancelled his show so that the FCC would approve Paramount (CBS' parent company)’s merger with Skydance Media. The network has denied this, claiming the cancellation was made for financial reasons.
