The world premiere of Seth Zvi Rosenfeld’s Downtown Race Riot opens December 3 in The Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center. The Off-Broadway staging from The New Group is helmed by Artistic Director Scott Elliott and features a cast led by Chloë Sevigny.
Completing the cast are Cristian DeMeo, David Levi, Moise Morancy, Josh Pais, Sadie Scott, and Daniel Sovich. The production began performances November 14.
Downtown Race Riot recalls a summer day in New York City in 1976 when a mob of young men descended on Washington Square Park and attacked people of color. In a cramped apartment in the Village, as the riot rages, a single mother, her son, and his best friend wrestle to find their place in the conflict.
The production features set design by Derek McLane, costume design by Clint Ramos, lighting design by Yael Lubetzky, sound design by M.L. Dogg, and fight direction by UnkleDave’s Fight-House.
The New Group previously presented the world premieres of Rosenfeld’s The Flatted Fifth, directed by Jo Bonney (1997), and Everythings Turning Into Beautiful, directed by Carl Forsman (2006).
