From the Amazon to the Hudson, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
The Metropolitan Opera's Summer HD Festival continues this week with screenings of operas from the Met's Live in HD catalog. The lineup includes Richard Strauss' Salome (August 25), Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (August 26), Jeanine Tesori's Grounded (August 27), Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann (August 28), Daniel Catán's Florencia en el Amazonas (August 29), Puccini's Tosca, and Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
BargeMusic's Here and Now Labor Day Festival will be held August 30. The festival will comprise two matinee concerts, at 2PM and 4PM. The former will feature the Dal Sogno ensemble with guest pianists Irina Nuzova and Donna Weng Friedman, performing Beata Moon's "the true meaning of justice...", Laura Kaminsky's Vukovar Piano Trio, Melody Eötvös' "About the Ash Land" and the world premiere of Stefania de Kenessey's MICROVIDS for Piano Sextet. The latter concert will feature cellist Rubin Kodheli and pianist Silvie Courvoisier performing works by Elgar, Stravinsky, and original compositions by Kodheli and Courvoisier.
Pianists Jeremy Denk and Conor Hanick continue performances at Little Island through August 28. On August 27, Hanick will be joined by violinist Keir Gogwilt to perform works by John Cage, Nicola Mattheis, Johan Westhoff, Béla Bartók, Adrian Knight, and Olivier Messiaen. All the performances will take place in The Glade on Little Island and be free to attend. Seating will open 30 minutes before the show time.
Dancers from the Limón Dance Company will give a free modern dance class the morning of Saturday August 30 on the lawn of Bryant Park. The class is open to all ages and experience levels.
