Titled "From Wags to Riches with Bill Berloni," the series, which is produced by Earth Touch, will make its debut in August as part of the network's month-long dog-themed programming event titled "Pawgust."
Berloni won a 2001 Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre for his work as Broadway's go-to guy for trained showbiz animals. His career dates back to the original 1977 Annie, for which he trained the first (and subsequent) Sandys.
Among his 16 Broadway assignments: Halen Mirren's corgis in The Audience, Audra McDonald's pooch Roxie in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, and Laura Bell Bundy's chihuahua in Legally Blonde.
"Bill Berloni is truly a unique breed: a brilliant trainer with a big heart, many of the dogs he puts on stage are dogs that he has personally rescued," said Tom Cosgrove, general manager of Discovery Family Channel. "This new series will charm the entire family with adorably gifted animals, larger-than-life characters and the amusing chaos that comes with owning a veritable backyard zoo."
"From Wags to Riches," according to production notes, "will follow Berloni in his work as an animal trainer, while also spotlighting his dedication to rescue work. As Director of Animal Training and Behavior to the Humane Society of New York, Berloni specializes in matching the right humans to the right animals. Berloni's personal passion for animal activism has also opened up the door to a pool of untapped talent- allowing him to rescue countless homeless dogs, and to give them a second life as stars on stage."
