Tony winner Bette Midler and Oscar winner and Tony nominee Allison Janney will voice the characters of Grandmama and Margaux Needler (Morticia's arch nemesis), respectively, in MGM’s animated version of The Addams Family, according to Deadline.
Co-directed by Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan from a script by Matt Lieberman, the film is scheduled to arrive October 11, 2019.
The voice cast will also feature Oscar Isaac as Gomez, Charlize Theron as Morticia, Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, and Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester.
The newest iteration of the Charles Addams property will follow the Addams family as they face a conniving reality TV host (Janney) while preparing for the arrival of their extended family.
In a statement, co-director Vernon said, “Greg and I have always been a fan of The Addams Family in past versions, so when we set out to make this movie, we were excited to do something new. With that in mind, I drew from the brilliantly original Charles Addams New Yorker cartoons for the look of the film and decided to tell the story of how Gomez and Morticia meet, find their house, and start their family.”
In addition to the popular TV series and two film adaptations, The Addams Family opened on Broadway in 2010 co-starring Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth. The musical features a book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa.
