From contemporary premieres to reimagined classics, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.

Conductor Leonard Slatkin joins the New York Philharmonic March 26-29, with saxophonist Timothy McAllister performing the New York premiere of John Corigliano’s Triathlon. Written for McAllister, the work includes movements for soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones. The program will also include Cindy McTee’s Double Play, and conclude with Shostakovich’s fifth symphony.

The Metropolitan Opera’s production of Jake Heggie’s Moby-Dick concludes this week, with final performances March 25 and 29. Performances also conclude for the current cast of Verdi’s Aida, including soprano Christina Nilsson as Aida and mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi as Amneris. The production will return in April with soprano Angel Blue and mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, who will be returning to the stage of the Met for the first time since February of 2020.

Amore Opera’s production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly concludes its run this week with performances through March 30 at the Hungarian House of New York. The production is updated with Japanese revisions and a libretto by Frances Swartz and Adam C J Klein. Klein also co-directs the production with Tami Swartz. Elizabeth Hastings conducts.

The Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble gives a concert at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall March 24, featuring selections from Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano Trio, Wynton MarsalisA Fiddler’s Tale Suite, and Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major. Carnegie Hall will also host performances this week from pianist Leif Ove Andsnes (March 25); the Tetzlaff Quartet (March 27); the Kronos Quartet (March 28); and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with pianist Mitsuko Uchida (March 29).

The Leonkoro Quartet makes their New York City debut at the 92nd Street Y March 24. The quartet will perform Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte, Hindemith’s String Quartet No. 2, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 15.

Contemporary dance company Hubbard Street Dance Chicago comes to the Joyce Theatre this week to perform a program including Ohad Naharin’s Black Milk, and three New York premieres: FLOCK’s Into Being, Azure Barton’s A Duo, and Johan Inger’s IMPASSE. Performances run March 25-30.

Bass-Baritone Joseph Parrish will give a recital with pianist Francesco Barfoed at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall March 25. The program will feature songs by Gustav Mahler, Harry T. Burleigh, Johannes Brahms, Moses Hogan, Franz Shubert, and traditional spirituals, as well as the New York premiere of Alistair Coleman’s Psalms.
