Juliana Canfield and Tom Pecinka are set to star in the world premiere of He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box, the first new work in a decade from acclaimed playwright Adrienne Kennedy, now 86. The two-hander weaves tales of Jim Crow, Nazism, love, hypocrisy, and yearning.
In He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box, Canfield and Pecinka play two adolescent lovers from a small town in Georgia: a biracial girl and a white boy whose father is instrumental to segregation laws. Evan Yionoulis directs.
The production from Theatre For a New Audience will begin performances January 18, 2018, at the Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn. The Off-Broadway engagement is scheduled through February 11 with a January 20 opening night.
He Brought Her Heart Back in a Box will feature set design by Christopher Barreca, costume design by Montana Levi Blanco, lighting design by Donald Holder, music and sound design by Justin Ellington, and video design by Austin Switser. Cole Bonenberger will be production stage manager, and Shane Schnetzler is assistant stage manager.
