Barbara Garrick (A Thousand Clowns on Broadway) and Laurence Lau (national tour of August: Osage County) are set to lead the cast of the Keen Company’s 25th anniversary production of A.R. Gurney’s play Later Life. Gurney’s romantic tale of missed connections and hope for new beginnings will play The Clurman Theatre at Theatre Row Off-Broadway February 27–April 14.
Garrick and Lau will play middle-aged couple Ruth and Austin, who meet at a party and rekindle a romance that began nearly 30 years prior. Completing the cast will be Liam Craig (Boeing Boeing) and Obie winner Jodie Markell (Machinal).
Keen Company Artistic Director Jonathan Silverstein will direct the production. Later Life will officially open March 15.
“While we still mourn the passing of our friend and collaborator Pete Gurney, it will be a joy to be back again in his world. After directing The Dining Room in 2008 and The Old Boy in 2013 (both at Keen), it is my absolute pleasure to be working on a third play of Pete’s,” said Silverstein in a statement. “With his astute human observations, unique comic sensibility and singular theatrical flair, Pete’s plays have continually stretched me as an artist and human. I look forward to re-introducing one of his best plays to the New York stage.”
Gurney, whose plays include Sylvia, Scenes From American Life, Love Letters, The Middle Ages, and The Dining Room, died June 13, 2017, at age 86.
The design team for Later Life will include Steven Kemp (scenic), Jennifer Paar (costumes), David Lander (lighting), and Obadiah Eaves (sound).
