Havana Music Hall, a new musical by playwright Carmen Pelaez and composer-lyricist Richard Kagan, will have its world premiere at the Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre in Coral Gables, Florida, this fall.
Set in 1958 Cuba, Havana Music Hall tells the story of husband and wife musical team Rolando and Ramona Calderon, who are on the verge of breaking through to the world’s stage when the Cuban Revolution tears apart the only life they’ve ever known. Almost 60 years later, the couple tries to forget the past in the now-devastated Havana Music Hall.
Maria Torres will direct and choreograph the premiere production that will run October 10–November 18. Torres was the associate choreographer on Broadway’s On Your Feet!, which brought the story of Cuban-American music icons Gloria and Emilio Estefan to Broadway in 2015.
Casting will be announced at a later date.
Havana Music Hall received a West Coast workshop last year.
Havana Music Hall has lyric translation by Cuban musicologist Jose “Perico” Hernandez, music supervision by Larry Blank, music direction by Manny Schvartzman, dramaturgy by Carmen Rivera, set design by Paul Tate dePoo III, costume design by Ann Closs-Farley, and additional casting by Binder Casting; the acting consultant is Seán Griffin.
