Wicked is the only musical in Broadway history to achieve that status for nine consecutive years. The Phantom of the Opera was Broadway's highest-grossing production for eight years, albeit not consecutively: 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 1997.

The musical also set a new Broadway record for the highest one-week gross with a box-office take of $2,947,172, for the week ending Dec. 30.

In the same week, Wicked set a new national touring record with a one-week gross of $2,755,070 at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis, as well as the house record at Honolulu’s Blaisdell Center with a gross of $1,585,402. (Both the Broadway production and the touring engagement in Honolulu played nine-performance weeks; the St. Louis engagement was a eight-performance week.)

Adapted from the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked delves into the back story of the iconic characters from Oz. The hit musical has a score by Stephen Schwartz, a book by Winnie Holzman, direction by Joe Mantello and musical staging by Wayne Cilento.

The production also features scenic design by Eugene Lee, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, sound design by Tony Meola, projections by Elaine J. McCarthy, wig and hair design by Tom Watson, music supervision and arrangements by Stephen Oremus, orchestrations by William David Brohn and dance arrangements by James Lynn Abbott.

Wicked won Tony Awards for Costume Design, Scenic Design and Best Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel). It was nominated as Best Musical.
