The new documentary Maria by Callas chronicles operatic soprano Maria Callas' life story through interviews, never-before-seen footage, and recordings. Pieced together by director Tom Volf, the film is a new and intimate view into the life of one of the most celebrated voices of the 20th century.
By using Callas' own voiceovers and film clips when possible, Volf allows Callas to form her own narrative. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato also lends her voice to passages from Callas' own journals.
The film, which premiered in France last year and has subsequently played multiple film festivals, will be released in U.S. theatres November 2.
